Trudy Askew: Bio

I have always been an artist.

I was born and raised in San Diego, California. Painting was my goal, so I pursued an extensive education in fine arts.  I attended the University of California at Santa Barbara, but transferred because of the distraction of student riots over the Viet Nam war.  I received my B.F.A. from the University of Texas, and fell in love with Texas, particularly Austin.  Other stops along the way included magic summers spent in Guadalajara, Mexico at the Universidad de Artes Plasticas; adventures at the Universidad de Valencia (Valencia, Spain) and The Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (Skowhegan, Maine).  My M.F.A. degree came from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana.

I moved to Houston Texas and opportunity knocked on my door.    My art received recognition: I won competitions; was written up in the press; and had a good reputation in the Houston art community.  But I traded my dreams for love and a steady paycheck.  I fell in love, married and raised a family.  I taught for many years;   my classrooms were exciting, crazy, and experimental; my students were passionate about art, and I learned as much as they did.

Now I paint full time, and am still in love with Texas.  I'm married and have one child.
